Despite being a Grammy and Golden Globe nominee with nearly fifteen years in the business you’d be forgiven for thinking that Zooey Deschanel was an erm New Girl on the scene. When in fact the actress and singer has been in more well known films than we have fingers to count on yet somehow (hard to believe we know) the kooky star hasn’t really stood out until now. Yet even though we’re only several episodes in, we’re already mad about the quirky and hilarious Jessica Day character Zooey plays in the hit TV comedy series The New Girl (see what we did there?)
So with our full attention captured, all eyes are on Ms. Deschannel’s off-screen wardrobe too! Described by the woman herself as 'whimsical and feminine' Zooey has quite the signature style. Queue sugary pink hues, strapless prom dresses and cutesy pearl necklaces. And in a season when the mood is all about a pastel colour palette, delicate lace and lady-like silhouettes this is no bad thing.
Zooey’s Bambi-like long dark lashes and standout brunette ‘bangs’ have an adorable Minnie Mouse vibe about them that despite her being thirty-two years old, totally work for her.
What’s intriguing about Zooey is that she can pull off what feels like any style, and despite 'the red-carpet thing of premieres and parties' being her 'least favourite part of the job' the actress looks totally at ease in everything from the incredible beaded Prada gown she wore to the Golden Globes this year to the kind of frothy one-shoulder Alice + Olivia frock Zooey wowed in at the FOX all-star party. It’s her confidence and versatility that mean she can do firecracker-foxy and cute-as-a-button chic in equal measure.
Zooey’s girlie style however isn’t new to the star, in fact she’s been honing it since her school days when as a child Ms. Deschannel would refuse to wear trousers, favouring 'party dresses all the time with patent-leather shoes!'. Zooey’s love of round-toe pumps hasn’t waned either and her most recent favorites include Miu Miu’s glitter beauties (which she snapped up in both gold and black) as well as Christian Louboutin’s leg-lengthening nude patent shoes.
But despite her lack of love for the red carpet 'circus' la Deschannel isn’t afraid of making an entrance, case-in-point her unforgettable style moment the at the 2011 Emmy Awards last September, where Zooey look to the stage in an incredible bubble-gum pink Monique Lhuillier gown. Accessorised with a Brigitte Bardot style hair-do and Van Cleef & Arpels jewels, she was the picture of fairytale fabulous; the kind of cartoon princess Walt Disney could have created.
Pushing fashion boundaries and setting new trends Zooey isn’t, but in a time when hitting style headlines comes only from Lady Gaga thrills and shock value Zooey Deschanel’s wardrobe is like a trip to the seaside...lots of fun and a very welcome break!
