Super Bowl Sunday isn’t usually the first thing we tune into. (American Football, hello?) But this year the sports event went high fashion, thanks to the half-time performance by Madonna.
The legendary popstar did a 12-minute set in the middle of the stadium, featuring both her classic tunes such as Vogue and her new single Give Me All Your Luvin. And amidst the roman soldiers and cheerleaders (well, come on this is Her Madjesty) were some seriously cool Givenchy Haute Couture costumes.
Head designer Riccardo Tisci had collaborated with Madonna to make sure the eyeballs of all 111 million people watching were on her. There was a gold sequin floor-length cape to open that was oh-so-Cleopatra; gold-plated gladiatorial style tunic, set off with some over-the-knee boots and black floorless number that in contrast looked, well quite tame.
‘Following my collaboration with Madonna on her last tour three years ago, it is a great honor for me to be a part of yet another historical and iconic moment,’ Tisci said this morning of working on the costumes for Super Bowl Sunday. ‘People say everything has a limit, but limits do not exist with Madonna. I am so happy that, after being busy in other scenes, she decided to go back on a music stage. Not only to bring us music, but also to make such a statement of performance and fashion.’
We couldn’t agree more. Watch Madonna performance above to see the woman and the Haute Couture outfits in action. Also, don’t miss the bit where MIA flashes a finger at the camera (oh, the joy of live performances) and where Madge makes a teeny slip up falling off one of the steps. Maybe she is human after all…
