When American actress Rooney Mara played Lisbeth Salander, the heroine in the US adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo it was more than just her on-screen self that underwent a transformation. Granted the tattoos, bleached eyebrows and multiple piercings that Ms. Mara adopted for her title character role have gone but Rooney hasn’t shaken off all of her biker Goth character’s look and in a short space of time has gone from wholesome girl-next-door to an uber sleek style supremeo.
As Rooney embarked on the mammoth promotional tour of press junkets and premieres over the last couple of months we’ve witnessed her new style evolve and fashion’s big-guns queue-up to dress the actress of the moment.
There’s no doubt Rooney’s short glossy jet-black hair sets the tone for her striking new look, making her almost unrecognisable from the pre-TGWTDT long wavy hair days. Then there’s her distinctive make-up where either a dark statement lip or barely-there nude gloss add further glamour. But its Rooney’s incredible wardrobe that’s had the fashion girls at Grazia HQ falling over themselves week-in-week-out, making red-carpet-Rooney-watch compulsive viewing!
Impeccably chosen dresses are Ms. Mara’s fashion weapon, think traffic stopping styles with minimal styling, and you’ve got Rooney’s powerful fashion formula. Forget jewellery! (Which is a brave and rare thing to do on the red carpet) and fussy accessories; have you noticed how Rooney never carries a bag or clutch? And her shoes do nothing more than quietly complement her look. But no matter her choice of frock, which have ranged from dramatic Dion Lee leather to feminine floor sweeping red lace Valentino, Mara always manages to look elegant and at ease (we’re guilty of a major style crush- are you picking up on that?) and that’s because she cleverly leaves her look up the power of her dress and lets nothing detract from it.
Core cut-outs (that’s sexy bare-bits around the waist) work well on Mara as do blocks of colour- check out how gorgeous she looks in that simple Miu Miu dress, and though its doubtful you’ll ever see Rooney in a floral number being feminine isn’t something she’s afraid of, case-in-point the cute as a button ruffle detail Lanvin beauty below.
And now with TGWTDT promotions over Rooney-watch has shifted to Oscar guessing! What will the actress with an 100% red-carpet success rate (Ms. Mara in that white Givenchy Couture gown being a personal Grazia highlight) wow us with for the biggest night of the year?! If the black Nina Ricci jaw-dropper she wore for the Golden Globes was the dress rehearsal we’re surely in for a treat!
