Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt on the Golden Globes red carpet
In case you hadn’t noticed, there was a little thing called the Golden Globes going down in Hollywood yesterday. The night kicked off with a wonderful parade of dresses, from the likes of Prada, Gucci, Lanvin and Dior. But it was Angelina Jolie who stole the show in a breathtaking white gown by Atelier Versace enlivened by a folded red detail on the neckline to match her crimson lips and matching clutch bag. What a welcome surprise! She was joined on the red carpet by a dapper Brad Pitt who was clearly proud of his partner, especially as her directorial debut, 'In The Land of Blood and Honey' was nominated for an award. ‘I know how hard she worked on this film and what it means to her and the country,’ he told E! ‘and I certainly know how hard I worked!’
Andrea Riseborough in Vivienne Westwood, Madonna in Reem Acra
Madonna was also keen to discuss her directorial debut, ‘W.E’, which scooped the Original Song award. ‘I had no idea that it was going to be so challenging, complicated, exhausting and fulfilling,’ she revealed while swathed in an incredible ballgown by Reem Acra. Madge’s date was the star of the film, Andrea Riseborough, who described the first-time director as ‘fantastic’. The English actress was waving the Brit flag thanks to a ginormous Vivienne Westwood gown. Hurrah!
Jessica Biel in Elie Saab
The other topic of discussion here at Grazia HQ is Jessica Biel. The actress was noticeably without her beau Justin Timberlake on the red carpet AND without an engagement ring, despite rumours that Mr JT proposed earlier this month. Ooh-err.
But inside the ceremony, all eyes were on Ricky Gervais. Despite (or maybe because of) the controversy the comedian caused at the past two Golden Globes, he was invited back to present last night’s extravaganza – so how did his wisecracks measure up? We’ll let you be the judge of that when we bring you a round-up of his greatest quips...
Ricky Gervais presents the Golden Globes
‘The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought – allegedly.’
‘Justin Bieber nearly had to take a paternity test. What a waste of a test that would have been! No, he's not the father. The only way that he could have impregnated a girl was if he borrowed one of Martha Stewart's old turkey basters. Open wide.’
‘I must not mention Jodie Foster’s 'Beaver'. I haven’t seen it myself. I’ve spoken to a lot of guys here and they haven’t seen it either. That doesn’t mean it’s not any good.’
‘Arnold and Maria, J. Lo and Marc Anthony, Ashton and Demi, Kim Kardashian and some guy no one will ever remember. He wasn't around long. 72 days — a marriage that lasted 72 days. I've sat through longer James Cameron speeches.’
Ah, we chuckle. Although Mr Gervais targeted celebrity break-ups and the likes of Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian, his comments were noticeably toned-down and less shocking than expected, avoiding the Hollywood heavyhitters he pounced on last year. Phewf! And this year, his jokes were well received by the crowd, with Madonna joining in the banter after he introduced her as being 'just like a virgin'. Her Madgesty fired back: 'If I'm still a virgin Ricky, then why don't you come on do something about it? I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years. On TV.' Guffaw!
Kate Winslet with her Best Actress award
So who won what? Well, it was a triumphant night for us Brits, with Kate Winslet, Idris Elba and 'Downton Abbey' all picking up a gong. Kate was named Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie for her role in Mildred Pierce and took to the stage in a sleek-and-chic monochrome gown by Jenny Packham with Roger Vivier shoes and Fred Leighton jewels. ‘I share this with my beautiful children, Mia and Joe, who light-up my life everyday,’ she said during her acceptance speech. ‘I’m so proud to be their mum.’ Aww.
Grazia Daily spoke to Jenny Packham earlier today for her thoughts on the British actress wearing her creation at such a glitzy event. 'I am a huge fan of Kate Winslet and therefore am naturally (totally) thrilled she choose to wear Jenny Packham last night,' the designer told us. 'Kate looked amazing as always and the classic but beautiful styling added elegance to the look.'
Michelle Williams wins Best Actress
Michelle Williams also dedicated her Best Actress award to her adorable offspring. ‘I consider myself a mother first and an actress second and so the person I most want to thank is my daughter,’ she said. ‘My little girl, whose bravery and exuberance is the example I take with me in my work and in my life. Thank you for sending me off to this job with a hug and a kiss everyday. I couldn’t have done it otherwise.’ *GULP* it's enough to bring a tear to our eye.
