Madonna hasn’t exactly got a great track record for her involvement in the film world (hello, The Next Best Thing) but on red carpet dressing? No one can beat her! Her Madgesty pulled out the fashion stops for London premiere of her new movie WE, wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier dress with a Dolce & Gabbana cape, those red gloves and oh just a few jewels!
Madonna has directed the film, which tells the story of King Edward VIII’s love affair with the Wallis Simpson that eventually led to the King’s abdication in 1936. As with her previous red carpet outfits for WE, Madonna stuck to the movie’s ladylike theme in London tonight with 40’s styled hair and red lips reminiscent of the tortured heroine of her film.
Earlier in the day Madonna had revealed to Graham Norton why she was so obsessed with getting the film made. ‘I felt like a real foreign outsider and idiot coming to the UK,’ she said. ‘I started to think I needed to research English history.’ And so a love affair with Wallis Simpson’s romance with the King of England started. ‘If you’re a romantic like me everyone wants to be swept away by a night knight in shining armour but we keep getting disappointed. If you have half a brain you know that doesn’t exist.’ So does she share any other similarities with Wallis? ‘I’m not as skinny as she was! But she was labeled as conniving and ambitious which was unfair and I can relate to that.’
Madge also confessed that whilst her directorial skills in WE might have been winning over the film crowd, her kids are still most unimpressed. ‘My children don’t give a F about my work. I’ve still got to get them to do their homework,’ she said.
Still it sounds like Lourdes is following in her fashion and entrepreneurial footsteps. Madonna confessed she thinks her daughter has been loaning out her old wardrobe to school friends (jealous!) and revealed what she says when Lourdes criticizes her outfits for being too risqué. ‘That’s rich coming from you!’
Wonder what Lourdes will have made of tonight’s Gaultier number?
