We love J Crew, and we’re super excited about what 2012 has in store for the label. After a stellar 2011 for the brand – when they launched in the UK on net-a-porter before launching their own e-commerce site – this year will see the label open their first physical retail store outside the US, set to open on London’s Regent Street. A lot of our love for Michelle Obama’s favourite label is aimed squarely at the super talented creative director Jenna Lyons, who has opened up to Pop Sugar TV about what she feels the key ingredients are for getting the J Crew look. Naturally, we open our notebooks and have pens poised.
'I think to me there's always got to be something that sort of turns it off' Lyons says. 'Meaning, if everything's shiny, there has to be something that feels a little casual, or something has to be a little messy… Things can't always be perfect, not everything can be buttoned, you know, there's got to be something that turns it on its head.'
Yes! Yes! We totally agree. And not just because it gives us license to look a little bit weathered (well, mainly for that reason). Jenna also reveals the secrets of her own personal style saying, bluntly that it’s down to 'um, having a lot of clothes?!'
'I love clothes, I love shopping, I have a huge array of everything from shoes to pants to shirts to dresses. I get excited about clothes so – I don’t know – maybe it works' she says.
On the evidence we have so far, Jenna, then we reckon you’re definitely making it work.
