Ever since John Galliano was ousted from Christian Dior earlier this year, a guessing game of whether the designer would continue his design career has plagued Planet Fashion. Do you remember there were rumours in July that he would be designing a collection for Topshop before they were quickly quashed? Since then, the furious speculation has died down.
Now Lady Amanda Harlech [above with Galliano in 2007] has reignited the discussion. 'It will be a fresh start,' the designer's long-time muse told The Telegraph at the Krug Happiness exhibition in London. 'I don't think he wants to come back to where he was before it happened. You'll never stop somebody like John making it work. He's an absolute genius and always will be.'
Galliano was dismissed from his position as Creative Director at the French fashion house in March due to a racist and anti-Semitic outburst in a Parisian café. At the trial in June, the designer apologised for the incidents, telling the court, 'All I can hope for in time is to address the personal failure which led to these circumstances and try and earn people's forgiveness'. It was confirmed by LVMH that under no circumstances would the flamboyant couturier return to the luxury conglomerate; although as yet no successor has been appointed.
One thing's for sure, Galliano has the support of a fash pack of fans, as well as Amanda. John Paul Gaultier described the designer as 'very talented. He has done some beautiful things for Dior', Patricia Field said, 'Beauty, intelligence and energy would describe John as I know him' and model Chanel Iman referred to him as 'one of the most amazing, genius men in this business'. And let's not forget the stunning wedding gown he created for Kate Moss's nupitals in August, a process which he described as his 'creative rehab'.
So will Galliano make a triumphant return in 2012? And what kind of 'fresh start' could Lady Harlech be referring to? Only time will tell...
