Alber Elbaz for Lanvin Christmas tree at Claridges

Alber Elbaz for Lanvin Christmas tree at Claridges - can you see Alber at the top with wings?

We rocked up at Claridge’s a teeny tad after the start of the party, excited to see Alber Elbaz, twinkling away at the top of the stairs, near the top of the giagantic tree with his own effigy at the top instead of a fairy – the ever-genial host, personified! We asked him what his plans for Christmas were. Seeing how he spends most to of the year tying grosgrain ribbons into bows and making everything sparkley and delightful, we would imagine that he would throw the most magnificent of all Christmas celebrations, probably roasting a whole suckling pig and ordering in plenty of jellied fruits. Well, it sounded like he actually gets a bit Christmassed out by the time it hits the 25th - since he mournfully announced that ‘I might be going to India for a bit, for a ‘oliday. Or, I might stay in Paris. And work.’ Oh what a let down Alber. We hope you have a splendid time, which ever you do!

Not ones to be disheartened, we grabbed a flute of champagne from a passing waiter and said hello to a few fellow fashion editors. Then there was a brilliant recital from Rosey Chan at a grand piano in the lobby, during which everyone fell into a hushed trance.  In between stuffing our mouths with scrumptious treats such as parsnip and chestnut croquettes, turkey and ham pies followed by gingerbread houses, biscuit stars and truffles (you just know you’ll get a good feed at Claridge’s) we pounced on Emilia Fox and her very dashing younger brother Freddie Fox, after correctly identifying her metallic silver outfit as Lanvin (and Freddie’s was too!) are you a muse of Alber, we asked; ‘Good heavens, no! A fan, not a muse’ she trilled.

What a swell party indeed!
