Congratulations to Sarah Burton who has won the Designer of the Year Award at The British Fashion Awards!
At tonight's ceremony, Sarah Burton was up against Christopher Kane and Erdem for the ultimate award of the evening. The accolade 'recognises an internationally acclaimed, leading British designer...who has directed the shape of fashion in the past year'. And what a year it's been!
As Melanie Rickey, our Fashion Editor At Large, notes, 'It has been such a roller-coaster for Sarah since February 2010 when she took over the creative reins at Alexander McQueen. Throughout the tumultuous process of losing a friend, gaining a major role at the company and quietly and brilliantly dressing a royal bride she has conducted herself with grace and modesty all the while producing exquisite breathtaking work.'
Of course, the most memorable McQueen moment of this year was The Dress. In top secret stylee, Burton created the wedding gown Kate Middleton wore to marry Prince William on Royal Wedding Day in April. 'It has been the experience of a lifetime to work with Catherine Middleton to create her wedding dress, and I have enjoyed every moment of it,' she said at the time. 'It was such an incredible honour to be asked, and I am so proud of what we and the Alexander McQueen team have created.' The dress won the designer critical acclaim around the world and Alexander McQueen is now one of the hottest brands, like, ever. What's more, the bridal gown won London its biggest summer hit by attracting a record number of visitors to Buckingham Palace.
Earlier this year, Grazia Daily walked the Fashion Mile with Sarah Burton to raise money for Save The Children before she had to dash off to Paris to present her wonderfully whimiscal Spring / Summer 2012 collection. And just last week, Fash Land was sent into a spin when it was announced the brand's diffusion line McQ is returning to London Fashion Week next year. Bring on 2012!
