Congratulations to Charlotte Olympia who has just won the Best Accessory Designer at the British Fashion Awards. Charlotte was up against Emma Hill for Mulberry and Katie Hillier for this year’s award, and follows in the immaculately clad footsteps of Nicholas Kirkwood, who won in 2010.
Olympia set up her label in 2007 after she graduated from London’s Cordwainers in 2004. She says that her aesthetic centres around femininity and is ‘inspired by the allure of glamour of old’. Her Autumn Winter 2011 collection, for instance, is inspired by the brilliant combination of ‘Porcelain, Persian rugs and Agatha Christie’. Congratulations Charlotte!
We spoke to the designer on the red blue carpet once she'd picked up her accolade...
What does winning mean to you? It’s fantastic, I love my new accessory!
How’s the past year been? It’s been busy. But I’ve got a great team who help me have my baby and still work goes on so it’s been great.
What’s been your highlight? Having a baby, on a personal level. On a work level, I’m starting work on my shop in New York which will be opening early next year.
What is so special about British fashion? They really champion young designers and I think that’s very important.
What are you wearing this evening? I’m wearing Vivienne Westwood accessorised with my own things.
What are the best shoes to wear for a red carpet event? Red shoes.
