When Kate Moss made a commercial for Mango with Terry Richardson earlier this year, a few lucky journos got to go and quiz the Sphinx like fashion icon about her latest foray into highstreet retail. As well as, presumably, quizzing her on the other gazillion topics on which she has so far remained mute.
Well, one such lucky journalist was Derek Blasberg, who has now published unseen excerpts from the interview on his blog. Our fave snippet from the interview is where Kate describes the English fashion aesthetic by saying ‘we English girls look a little…lopsided… Messy in the nicest way.’ Which we absolutely love as a term to describe the artful insouciance of the great and fashionable of good old Blighty. Lopsided! Why didn’t we think of that?!
Other excerpts from their chat include:
On the UK high street icon that is M&S: ‘I grew up wearing Marks & Spencer, and that’s where I got all my underwear when I was young. Now I just mix it in with the Stella McCartney, darling.’
On the highstreet generally: ‘you can get amazing stuff now. Miss Selfridge, when I was a kid, was where we used to go, but now they do clothes that women can buy. It’s not just for the kids. Now everyone goes to Topshop, everyone goes to Mango… it’s not just about the teenagers who can’t afford designer clothes.’
And more on London: ‘When I go to Spitalfields Market, or when I used to go to Portobello, which I don’t really do anymore, because it’s gotten so touristy, or when you go to a club, when you see the boys and the girls—there’s a real mix. The boys look like the girls, and the girls look like the boys, and that’s interesting. They don’t do that in Europe yet. The French boys don’t dress like girls.’
