Altuzarra Spring Summer 2012
Congratulations to New York designer Joseph Altuzarra of label Altuzarra! Well done for winning the coveted CFDA Fashion Fund. His prize will be £189 000 – that should help him expand his business. Also rewarded last night were jewellery designer Pamela Love as well as a brand called Creatures of the Wind, which is designed by Shane Gabier and Chris Peters. Each of these took home £63 000 from teh ceremony in New York. Well done one and all!
Altuzarra's USP is that kind of sporty, slightly synthetic but uber chic design that seemingly only someone young and funky from New York can pull off successfully. Joseph’s story goes like this – he was born and raised in Paris, and after graduating high school, attended Swarthmore College in Philadelphia, where he completed a B.A. in Art and Art History, with a strong focus on fashion and architecture.

As per any good fashion yarn, Joseph then headed straight for New York, joining the industry as a design intern at the Marc Jacobs studio. Next was the Proenza Schouler team as freelance designer. In October 2006, Riccardo Tisci recruited Joseph as design assistant for Givenchy, where he worked on the ready-to-wear collections, with particular emphasis on tailoring. It was during his time in Paris that Joseph Altuzarra decided to move back to New York and launch his own line, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Fund itself is a kind of pet project of Anna Wintour and the CFDA, which is headed up by the redoubtable Diane von Furstenberg. Other finalists this year include Suno’s Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis; and Ohne Titel’s Alexa Adams and Flora Gill. Previous winners have included Alexander Wang and those handsome boys from Proenza Schouler, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough and they seem to have done quite well for themselves ever since.
