Goodness me, Dazed & Confused is 20 years old today! If that doesn’t make you feel old, then you’re clearly more of a spring chicken than we are! It’s notoriously difficult to keep a magazine going in these economic times, let alone an independently owned little cool one like this, so as a salute to all involved in the iconic magazine, here are some little facts and things we love about DAZED to mark the occasion. Happy Birthday guys!
1 It was started back in 1991 as a black and white poster/zine, but quickly grew to the status of a full blown colour magazine.
2 The founders Rankin and Jefferson Hack met at London College of Printing, as it was called then, and now known as London College of Communication in London’s elephant and Castle.
3 Another founding member of the team, Katie Grand (ever heard of her?) the first Fashion Editor now styles for a zillion top brands, is Marc Jacob’s right hand woman and is founder and Editor-in-Chief of LOVE magazine.
4 Although a ton (probably at least 50% of the fashion industry) started or pursued their careers there at some point, someone who might not have become who she is, Katie Hillier, used to work with Katie Grand. One day Grand spotted a key-ring Hillier had made and the rest, as they say is fashion history!
5 You know ol’ Nicola Formichetti? Superstylist, creative head of the Haus of Gaga and head of design for the revamped Mugler, learned how to be a stylist at the hand of Katie Grand and went on to be Dazed’s one-time Fashion Director.
6 Sharmadean Reid, the founder of groovy nail salon WAH and super stylist was Nicola’s assistant at the mag. Hence the chain of talent continues.
7 Jefferson Hack not only built a publishing empire from his humble zine, but also managed to snag a supermodel when he went to interview Kate Moss for their February 1999 issue. Rankin photographed her wearing nothing but a pair of suspenders and stockings, while Jefferson asked 'there's been a lot of different men mentioned in your life recently, but no one permanent relationship. Is there no one out there good enough for you?' …
8 …The couple’s little cute daughter Lila Grace, was born in 2002.
9 Designer Gareth Pugh secured the front cover with his St Martins’ graduate collection, while his stylist and bestie, Katie Shillingford is the current Fashion Editor (he even designed her magnificent wedding dress earlier this year).
10 Rankin has reached the summit of photography stardom and among those who’ve posed for his lens are Madonna, Bono, Heidi Klum, Damien Hirst and Jude Law, Britney Spears, Klylie, the Spice Girls, David Bowie, Bjork, Lily Allen, Dame Vivienne Westwood and even Tony Blair.
11 The mag did so well that the creative pair were able to found the fashion biennial, Another, as well as Another Man.
12 As well as working with loads of the glammest people around, Rankin has been involved with numerous charity projects including Women’s Aid and AIDS charities in Africa. Their brilliant cover starring disabled athlete Aimee Mullins in her artificial running legs was the idea of Alexander McQueen who art-directed the shoot.
13 Not content with producing brilliant magazines to inspire and inform us all, they are pretty much a multi-platform operation encompassing Dazed Digital and DAZED TV.
Jefferson Hack and friends beam with pride, while Kate Moss admires a shoot of herself!
PHEW! And now for some pictures of their private view party last night at Somerset House! It was first look at the exhibition, 20 years of Dazed & Confused magazine, Making It Up As We Go Along curated by Hack and former Dazed photographic editor Emma Reeves which brings to life the book of the same name, published by Rizzoli and also launched at the event.
Poppy Delevinge and Gemma Arterton (who are both dressed in All Saints, we heard!)
THAT was followed by an intimate soiree at swanky location W London, attended by the likes of Poppy Delevinge and Kate Moss, where the guests drank ABSOLUT vodka cocktails including ABSOLUT Swedish Kiss, along with Peroni beer and Ty Nant water. What a night!
