After Grazia Daily sent an early morning twit pic of Mary Katrantzou for Topshop’s one-and-only preview piece from the high street giant’s SS12 press day last week, we couldn’t have imagined just how the tweeting world would spiral into practical must-have-it meltdown. But then again, that is the power of Mary. We’ve told you before just how her fashion star is on a constant ascent – with the likes of power-house fashion eds such as Anna Dello Russo and major red-carpeters like Keira Knightley choosing Mary’s exquisite, instantly recognisable demi-couture wares. And whilst it’s not the first time Mary’s created a collection for Topshop, this will be the biggest yet. Her brilliant headline-grabbing S/S’12 catwalk, a flock of buyers placing seriously BIG orders and a coming collaboration with Longchamp means that this truly is her moment. And thus, everyone is more than interested.
So those clever folk at Topshop, (they never miss a beat, do they?), have her designing a 14 piece collection - one that could surely rival the absolute fash-pack hysteria that Christopher Kane’s range induced all those years ago. And why? Well, in if you think back to Mr Kane’s collection, it sold like hotcakes because of its very believable and somewhat literal translation from the catwalk to the sidewalk. You really felt like you were getting a genuine piece of Kane genius in your wardrobe. Just one look at Mary’s bubble-hemmed, digitally printed asymmetric dress (have you SEEN just how beautifully cut that is? And the intricate clashing prints? Have you?!) and there’s no denying its runway-related value. Naturally, we’re holding out for a full collection of seriously statement items – with no watering down whatsoever, please!
So then, what of the rest? Well, we’ve heard that the line is complete, being photographed as.we.speak and we’ll be sure to bring you all of the updates as they reach us. But, alas, you will have to wait until February to buy, as it will launch as part of Topshop’s 10 year celebration of their support for the NEWGEN scheme. Eeek, that’s, like, maybe 100 days away. Let the countdown begin.
