Ashley Olsen as Marie Antoinette and Marc Jacobs as a cheerleader in 2007
There is one day per year when it is acceptable to trot out your fallopian tube-inspired hat and dress like Bijork on crack. Yep, it’s Halloween. Some (lazy?) people are content with donning a black wig and calling themselves Morticia, but not this lot. THIS lot go all out to strike fear into revellers across the land with bonkers Darth Vader masks, ice skates and err, camel toes. God love them. So let’s take inspiration from the wacktacular costumes profiled herein courtesy of the stars, fashion designers and supermodels who've werked it for Halloweens gone by. Don’t forget to let us know who deserves a trick and who a treat...MWHAHAHA!
Trust these catwalkers to show us how to get our freak on, sexy style. We've seen Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Kate Moss going for showgirl chic with flesh-plumping corsets, twinkling flapper dresses and lashings of cobweb-like lace perfect for next season's 1920s trend.
Carine Roitfeld's 'Le Bal des Vampires' celebrating her biography 'Irreverent' gave us more than enough fash-spiration come 31st October - or indeed your average Saturday night. Ciara, Anja Rubik and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld were our personal faves. Just add blood-red lippy.
Here's Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford in 1994 proving that even supermodels can't get away with dressing like ice-skaters without coming off as a little nutsy. What hope is there for those poor 'Dancing on Ice' contestants?
Gisele Bündchen, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Alessandra Ambrosio have all masked-up in the past but there's no disguising those killer cheekbones, ladies.
And then there’s Heidi Klum. The supermodel is officially THE Queen of Halloween, dressing up as a purple Avatar lady and multi-armed Hindu god, to name just two of her bonkers outfits. What WILL she come up with this year we wonder?
And from models to designers, we well want Gareth Pugh's creepy mask for the Grazia Halloween party, although looks like it'd take out an eye or two. So failing that, we'll be making like a fang-tastic Olivier Theyskens with Edward Cullen-esque contacts. Oh, and how cute is the bespectacled Alber Elbaz in an embellished cat mask and cape? LOVE. HIM.
Of course, Marc Jacobs deserves an extra special mention for his wickedly ingenious ways. Whether dressed as a pig, a frighteningly life-like pigeon...
...or surpassing himself as a gigantic camel toe (yup), Marc never fails to get into the Halloween spirit. And boy, does he go for it. Truly terrifying stuff.
Ah yes, who could forget when Roberto Cavalli dressed up as Karl Lagerfeld in 2007? Meanwhile, the Dolce & Gabbana boys played it a tad tamer with feathered masks and a Naomi Campbell accessory. And is that you, Zac Posen? We barely recognised the American designer when he clowed around in this bizarre mish-mash of an outfit *shudders*
If you're anything like us, you'll use any excuse to throw on a floor-sweeping gown. Take a tip from Carine Roifeld with layers of animal print and flesh-flashing sheer chiffon, channel a white-faced Alexa Chung as a ghoulish Marie Antoinette, or be a mad hatter like Anna Dello Russo. Alternatively, just go as Anna Dello Russo.
So do tell - what will YOU be wearing, pumpkins? Let us know below...
