Sometimes we don’t know what we cherish more about Karl Lagerfeld: his beautiful clothes or his perfectly executed sound bites. Par example, he recently came out with this little nugget: “I can do whatever I want. Exclusivité is very démodé.”
This is one decree we never thought we’d see coming from Herr Lagerfeld, he of the resort shows that take over whole exotic islands, or the designs for €250,000 safes and £1,500 teddy bears. Indeed the scion of Chanel was once quoted as saying “We have no budget, we do what we want and throwing money out the window brings money back in through the front door. The bottom line is that I don’t deal with the bottom line. The luxury in my life is I never have to think about it.”
Perhaps he is getting charitable in his dotage, but it’s more likely that he has thought very carefully about the state of the world and has taken the strategic decision that the masses are where it’s at. So we can all rejoice as Karl opens up his beautiful mind to everybody, with a new collection that will be priced starting at – GASP - £50!
Slated to launch on January 25th the range – called simply ‘Karl’ (he’s even cutting back on his own name, how delightfully economical) – will be stocked exclusively on Net-a-Porter and will consist of around 70 pieces all imbued with Lagerfeld loveliness. The “rock chic collection” of biker jackets, silver jeans, LBDs and fingerless gloves will be designed with an aim to “making luxury affordable and accessible.”
Lagerfeld’s previous forays into the dangerous world of mass consumerism have included a one-off collection for H&M and more recently a collection for Macy’s, but unlike both of these capsule ranges - which were essentially flash-in-the-pan peeks behind the Lagerfeld curtain - this new venture is here to stay.
Lagerfeld is working on developing a brand of streetwear that will become as iconic as his own style, so get ready to pop your collars and remove all colour from your wardrobe as the Karl juggernaut rolls into town.
