Mary Katrantzou shows us how to make a bejewelled gown!

12 October 2011

So, designer Mary Katrantzou is no longer a ‘one to watch’ but much more of a ‘must see’ highlight of London Fashion Week these days. She’s won over critics, buyers, celebrities and fashion fans with her intricate, hyper-real digital prints and increasingly, her futuristic sculptural shaped garments. We got our hands on this quite in-depth video which documents the creation of her final look for Spring Summer 2012 – a beyond intricate embellished dress encrusted with literally squadillions of Swarovski crystals.

In the footage, Mary takes us through from the conceptual stages where she and her team assemble a mood board of all her inspiration, from fine artists who have worked with metal to a veritable rainbow of flowers, to the crystals in every colour of the rainbow and how they assemble the embroidery. Anyway, we were fascinated, and thought at first we might pick up a few tips on how to create our own 3D jewel-encrusted ball gown. Sadly, even after a couple of viewings we don’t think we’ll be able to copy Mary’s ideas any time soon, as she seems to have a technical knowledge several thousand years in advance of ours. Oh well.
