Wednesday saw the much hyped second ever Nicola Formichetti collection for Mugler see the light of day at their show, but it seems to have failed to live up to expectations. Oh no! What went wrong? Perhaps things got off on the wrong foot, when instead of appearing on the runway itself, Lady Gaga popped up on a giant screen in some sultry footage from uber-photographers Inez & Vinoodh shaking her multi-coloured bunches and gnashing her newly gappy front teeth, mouthing bon mots like ‘Do not anger the Mugler woman, she will eat you’ and ‘I am a Mugler woman, don’t fuck with me, don’t fuck with Mugler’. Huh. This didn’t put anyone in a particularly receptive mood for the clothes, as critics, for example the ones from the Associated Press grumbled; ‘It increasingly feels like Formichetti and the brand’s ready-to-wear designer, Sebastien Peigne, are grasping at straws, trying to come up with an outrageous new look that can become the brands new identity instead of finding a way to update its historical legacy’
New York Magazine bemoaned the absence of Gaga herself, saying ‘if Gaga had been on the runway drinking a glass of wine, no one would have minded.’
And harshest of all, the Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley tweeted, ‘I have rarely seen so many pissed off people rush out of a fashion show. Mugler. No new trends there," later elaborating: ‘It was a melange of the trends of the past 15 years: Beige from 2010, articulated shoulders from 2009, gothic, asymmetrical cuts from Helmut Lang.’
Oh dear. Hopefully the hardcore fans won’t be put off!
