Top Ten Smoking Slippers - This Season's Flat Shoe!

Penelope Chilvers bespoke smoking slippers

Industry bible WWD reports that “smoking slippers” (as they’re being dubbed – think: Hugh Hefner’s footwear of choice), are outselling every other style of flat shoe. Yes, even the style bloggers’ favourite - the brogue.

Admittedly, we weren’t entirely convinced about the slipper style when the traditionally at-home flats started appearing on all our favourite online boutiques.

That is, until we spotted Grazia’s Fashion Editor Sophie Ferguson Jones, our resident go-to girl for any must-wear items for the coming season, wearing her own pair.

SFJ arrived in the Grazia offices one day last week wearing grey glitter slippers from Senso, with cropped indigo jeans and a (ahem) Chanel cropped tweed jacket (she’s Fashion Editor for a reason, ladies!). We instantly fell in love.

Anyway, here’s what Sophie has to say about this season’s Smoking Slipper and why you need them…

'The smoking slipper is the new ballet pump! I’ve got a slight obsession - I’ve got them in three colours: leopard, snake and silver glitter oh, and gold glitter. Mine are from Senso, it’s an Australian company, set up by three sisters.'

Why They're Right for Now

'I like the slightly Seventies vibe – it’s that whole Hugh Hefner thing'.

'They’re new ballet pump. They’re a men’s shoe so they work with mannish trend; but they’re not as tough as a brogue'.

Why You Need Them

'I just like them , they’re so easy; slip on, slip off . And they’re really incredibly comfy, of course.'

'It’s a great neutral shoe - they’re less a statement than a brogue or penny loafer'.

Wear Them With …

'Tailored or cropped trousers, anything mannish.'

'They work for evening too, cos they come in all those luxury fabrics (I’ve got velvet ones from Office too!)– I’ve worn them with a tuxedo shorts suit'.

'Or they’re neutral enough to wear with girly skirt.'

'Just have fun with them!'

Meanwhile, Sophie’s next purchase is set to be ‘a pair of bespoke smoking slippers from Penelope Chilvers’ (pictured, top) prices from £350…
