Here’s a quiz; who’s the most extravagantly attired pop star in history? And who is the most lavishly theatrical celebrity photographer of all time? If you’d answered Lady Gaga and Annie Leibovitz to those mini questions you’d be correct, and therefore already imagining in your head the kind of full-on decadence that might start erupting all over the place if you put the two of them together in a full scale production for a Vanity Fair shoot. Agreed?
Well here they are (we can only assume stuttering traffic to a complete halt and drawing crowds of rubber neckers on all sides) getting up to mischief on the streets of New York. For the purposes of this shoot, Gaga has abandoned all previous pretence of ‘the natural look’ imitating Donatella Versace or otherwise in subtle makeup and a cute LBD, and has reverted to full-on surgical intervention-style stilt shoes, steam punk goggles, gold leaf makeup and the biggest sleeves this side of a West Yorkshire leg of mutton contest at a country show.
We know that Annie’s photographs owe a lot not just to the costumes and makeup but to her intricate lighting design and post production trickery so the end result looks more like a lavishly rendered Renaissance painting than anything created in 2011. She’s even personally gone bankrupt because she can’t stop spending in her quest to art direct not only her work but her entire life in a consistently luxurious style! We can’t wait to see the final pictures!
