A baby bump swathed in Lanvin, Lady Gaga dressed as a greasy boy, Nicki Minaj in a surgical mask and Katy Perry's parasol – yep, Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards provided more than enough fashion moments for our hungry eyes. So having already coo-ed over Beyonce's maternity caftan, let's examine the rest...
With Lady Gaga’s wacktacular wardrobe under wraps, Katy Perry was the honorary kooky cartoon character of the night and she began by going Geisha. This baby-blue mini-dress covered in cherry blossoms, green trimmings and twinkling crystals is by Atelier Versace, accessorised with pink flowers in her newly-dyed hair plus matching neon Jimmy Choo sandals. A pretty parasol was a cute finishing touch.
Then, like the colourful chameleon she is, K-Pez switched into a delightful confection from Christian Dior’s A/W’11 couture collection to collect her Best Video award. A cheese-like fascinator by Stephen Jones + pink jacket with mint green lining and an oversized yellow button + a black and white printed skirt + multi-coloured Giuseppe Zanotti wedges (phewf!) = Liquorice Allsorts fabness. Bravo!
BUT Nicki Minaj was in town doing her best to snatch The Kooky Crown by apparently raiding a Harajuku nursery.
It's hard to accurately decipher her umm, ensemble, but we're seeing multi-coloured mounds of hair, a Shojono Tomo mask, an ice cream necklace, a pointy mirrored contraption over a pink tutu plus printed tights and socks. Oh, and a tail of stuffed toys. Was she trying to make up for Gaga's minimalism by going over the edge of edgy?!
In the more demure corner, three cheers for Adele who was backing British in a black Burberry frock with a geometric pattern on the neckline. And would you look at that hair?! What a brilliant bouffant she has.
Aw, how brills does Katie Holmes look? Until you get to the ankles, that is. We're loving the glossy K-Mid locks, glowy tan and wicked Azzedine Alaia dress, but why did Mrs Cruise team them with clompy Proenza Schouler boots and a please-think-I'm-hip pose? >sigh< Also: can someone please tell us why Katie is at the VMAs?
Another attendee letting footwear and an awkward pose ruin her look was Britney Spears who wore mid-calf, peep-toe Gina boots with her sequin-covered Moschino romper. Woops, she's done it again, etc.
Meanwhile Miley Cyrus went the sophisticated route by covering up in a long-sleeved floor-length number. This one’s from Roberto Cavalli’s Pre-Fall collection and is decorated with a mix of prints, from leopard to floral. Miley added a diamond Lorraine Schwartz choker and drop earrings for a musty-fusty grand dame finish.
Onto the totes adorbz Selena Gomez who went all Morticia Addams on us with a gothic creation from Julien MacDonald’s A/W’11 catwalk. From the high neckline to the lace detailing and mullet skirt, this one's all about the drama-rama. The gold accessories - Brian Atwood heels, Judith Leiber metallic clutch, Lorraine Schwartz drop earrings - brighten things up a notch, but we can't help feeling, much like Miley, that this one's a tad too mature for a 19-year-old at a MTV fest, y'know?
Kelly Rowland was also in black thanks to this Falguni & Shane Peacock stunner consisting of a feathered-and-leathered skirt, a sheer top and lashings of gold embroidery. Zoe Saldana went for a similar look with a tweed tunic from Barbara Bui’s A/W’11 collection, funked up by gold, silver and leather strips, snazzy snake-skin heels and those killer legs.
