Everyone’s favourite white-haired, nonagenarian fashionista; (no, not Karl Lagerfeld you silly billies!) Iris Apfel, is going to be celebrated in a film all about her! It’ll be a documentary rather than a biopic, made by filmmaker Albert Maysles, who you may or, may not know, was the brains behind the 1975 film Grey Gardens – the inspiration for the S/S ’11 Mulberry collection, all about Big Edie and Little Edie, an eccentric mother and daughter living in a rambling mansion in dilapidated but glamorous squalor in 1975.
With Jason Wu
Anyway, Mr Maysles, (who we’ve already established as an authority on eccentric ladies) described Iris as ‘wonderfully strong-willed, opinionated and single-minded’. Hmm . . . we’ve always thought that Iris seemed lovely and friendly but the above phrase is CLEARLY a euphemism for grumpy madam. We mean; ‘single minded’? That practically means Anna Wintour levels of mood swings.
This is the second major fash-based project for the 90 year-old to be announced this year, after all the kerfuffle of the accessories line she is launching for the Home Shopping Channel. We hope the film manages to get off the ground with less hitches, as we would LOVE to settle back with a bag of chocolate brazil nuts and 90 minutes of Iris’s particular brand of fashion magic!
