We knew he had his sights set high: Alexander Wang, undoubtedly one of the biggest breakthrough names in fashion over the past few years, has revealed to Harpers Bazaar that he sees himself with a multi platform lifestyle brand not dissimilar to Ralph Lauren.
‘Ralph Lauren is someone that I've always looked up to’ says Wang. ‘That's what I want to be able to do — have control until the very end. And at the same time, have as much passion and love and enjoy it as much, and for that to be able to be translated into the product… You can really feel that from someone like Ralph. You know the things that he loves, you can see it, you can see it in the stores, you can feel it in the product that he creates.’
Also, it turns out that Lauren has sent Wang congratulatory notes after his wins (plural) at the CFDA’s. ‘I have them saved and filed away’ says Wang. ‘I was just really touched by that because I'd never met him before'.
Wang’s contemporaries are no less glowing about his future, with Diane von Furstenberg describing the designer thus: ‘Alex is a star… He is making a real impact in American fashion… He loves life and people. And people love him in return… He is talented, determined, and ambitious’.
Glowing indeed. Something tells us that Wang’s ambitions won’t remain unfulfilled for long..
