Of all the famous people on our radars these days, it sometimes it would be quicker to count the celebs who DON’T have famous parents, well, almost. But one young lady you rarely see splashed about in the press is Frances Bean Cobain. Although her mom is Courtney Love and her dad the late, great Kurt Cobain, (or perhaps because of this very reason) she tends to keep a low profile, going to University and when she was younger, living with her grandmother and aunt rather than Courtney.
Now she is 19, she’s been shot by Hedi Slimane in a variety of moody, rebellious-teen poses but looking extremely beautiful. The shots appeared on Hedi’s photoblog have been picked up on the internet, but it’s not known who commissioned them. Surely a magazine would want to print them before they appeared all over his blog? Maybe they were just for fun.
Mr Slimane is the menswear designer, whose sensational pieces for Dior Homme reputedly inspired Karl Lagerfeld to shed half of his body weight, or whatever it was – who has since taken up photography, and even made some fairly strongly worded comments about what he sees to be lacking from the world of high fashion.
More like the career-changing Helmut Lang than the collaborations-crazy Karl, Hedi is a man of few words, and even less self-publicity. Perhaps that is one of the reasons he was attracted to photographing the enigmatic daughter of one of the most mythologised couples in rock. On the same blog stream we saw heart-breaking soft-focus pictures of another tattooed mythological creature, the late Amy Winehouse.
Looking pensive and often away from the camera, these not-seen before pictures seem unbearably poignant for the gloomy aspect from the black and white film and the fact they are not sharply in focus makes her look more etheral than ever.
