Yesterday saw us dreaming of wrapping ourselves in Claudia Schiffer’s cosy cardies and today, it’s the turn of Kate Winslet who’s poured her curves into St. John’s latest luxury knitwear. Hmm, snuggily.
And yet, we’re somewhat befuddled. Remember last year when St. John’s chief executive told WWD that the US brand 'wanted to make a clean break from actresses and steer away from blondes and cleanse the palette'? So why choose Kate the for the new A/W ’11 campaign who, last time we checked, is a err, blonde actress? >befuddlement<
Well, having seen these gorgeous shots, we reckon it must’ve been the Brit beauty’s curvilicious credentials that won her the role. Posing sultrily at a retro New Jersey theatre, Ms Winslet proudly has her curves on display in elegant but clingy sweater dresses and blazers. And considering past St. John girls have included the rather-lithe Karen Elson, Gisele and Angelina Jolie (who reportedly 'overshadowed' the company, yikes!), employing the voluptuous English Rose is an undeniably refreshing decision.
'With St. John, you can look extremely chic without trying too hard,’ claims Kate. 'You don't feel as though they are clothes that only a model would be able to wear. And obviously I am not a model, I don't have a model's body, I have a real shape. And that just means a lot to me to be able to wear clothes that do embody that message of strength and power and femininity in a real shape.'
In fact, Kate is fast forging a successful modelling career with that fabulous ‘real shape’ of hers. Although this is the actress's first fashion campaign, lest we forget when she recently smouldered sans clothes for Lancôme and last year, she was appointed as the face of Swiss watchmaker Longines. So we say bravo, K-Winz, may your curve crusade continue.
