Will Sonia Rykiel sell (some of) her business?

12 July 2011

So, she’s one of Grazia Daily’s favourite knitters, she’s a French national treasure and was so pleased at being called ‘La Reine du Tricot’ that she adopted it as her official motto. (Queen of knitwear, for any non polyglots out there). Yes . . .it’s SONIA RYKIEL! Although Sonia is still on the scene, her daughter Nathalie is the president of the company these days.

Well, the family owned company has been doing so well recently that they need solutions to help them expand as fast as they would like to. A possibility would be to sell a minority stake in the biz, and use the money to build their empire. The company Edmond de Rothschild Corporate Finance have been drafted in although according to Nathalie, ‘I have not taken any decision,’ Rykiel told WWD, because the brand is capable of continuing its development without outside partners. ‘I have only just started analysing the possibility. I don’t know if it’s something I want to pursue, but I want to develop the brand. It has huge potential, in Asia obviously, but elsewhere also. I know that I can go much faster and further with outside help, but I am not even at the stage of contemplating whether the partner should be French or international.’

Now if Camilla, her daddy, or other fashion-trepreneurs with a few spare millions down the back of the sofa are reading this, we suggest you get in touch!
