Do we ever get tired of playing fashion musical chairs? Well, to be honest, yes, we do but not often and it’s not long before we get excited again and dive right into another rumour mill to fish out the facts. So, here’s a new one to mull over this sunny day: Hedi Slimane for Pierre Cardin! Did someone say ‘groovy’?!
This is indeed very much of the ‘rumour’ kind although it’s such an odd one it could well be true. There's already been talk about Hedi’s return to design – his last position was at Dior Homme before leaving in 2007 to pursue his passion for photography – and intriguingly, shortly after Hedi himself declared ‘it’s time!’ a number of commenters on The Imagist blog suggested that Cardin was the brand for him! Adding to the mystery, The Imagist himself tweeted this yesterday: ‘You will witness the return of Pierre Cardin to ultra-blue chip relevancy’. Ooooh!
But what does Monsieur Cardin have to say about it all? After all, the man that catapulted the Sixties into the Space Age and gave us the ‘bubble dress’ is very much alive and well, although he himself said last week at a party in Paris, ‘I am almost 89, you know. I might be alert for another two, three years, but after that, I’ll be a little bit senile’! The iconic designer is keen to hand over his empire to new owners soon. ‘A decision is fairly imminent’, he said. ‘I want to do it this year.’ His minimum asking price? One billion euros. Let another round of fashion musical chairs commence!
