FEUD ALERT! Alaia attacks Karl Lagerfeld AND Anna Wintour!

23 June 2011

It's a brave man who attacks this powerful pair but that hasn't put Azzedine Alaia off. Following on from the tantalising news that the King of Cling turned down the covetable Dior job, he's taken to his soap box to spill on fellow fashion tycoons Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour. Prepare to clutch your pearls in horror, dears…

First up for attack is the Chanel chief. 'Happily, women love me and buy my clothes, unlike Karl who’s never been loved like me,' Alaia tells Virgine magazine. Miaouw! But he doesn't stop there - oh no. 'I don’t like his fashion, his spirit, his attitude. It’s too much caricature.' >gulp<

What's more, the pint-sized Tunisian alleges that Uncle Karl has never touched a pair of scissors in his life. 'One day he does photography, the next he does advertisements for Coca-Cola. I would rather die than see my face in a car advertisement. We don’t do the same work. And I think that he is not doing a favour to young [designers] who might think it works that way.' Not one to beat around the bush, Alaia's comments are certainly refreshingly honest but has he gone a bitchy step too far?

With the gloves well and truly off, Alaia goes on to tackle another master of Planet Fashion, Anna Wintour. It's no secret that the pair have had a history of feuding — remember when the designer blamed the US Vogue Editrix for allowing only one photograph of his designs to be included in the Met's Models as Muses exhibition back in 2009? Consequently, he asked seven supermodels, including Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista who were due to wear his gowns to the Met Ball, not to.

Cut to his Virgine interview and he declares that Ms Wintour runs the Vogue business very well, but not the fashion part. 'When I see how she is dressed, I don’t believe in her tastes one second.' Hmm, has this animosity been bred by bitterness, we wonder? 'She hasn’t photographed my work in years even if I am a best seller in the US and I have 140 square meters at Barneys… Anyway, who will remember Anna Wintour in the history of fashion? No one.' Yikes, we spy handbags at dawn but Alaia ain't afraid. '[Anna] scares everybody. But when she sees me, she is the scared one,' he reveals.

So Alaia vs Lagerfeld + Wintour - who would win in this fashwan fight? We couldn’t possibly comment...

But you can! So take it away in the box below.
