It’s not just the film and music industries that love giving its stars awards you know, fashion is at it too and during the hiatus between the S/S and A/W fashion weeks with only couture, resort and menswear to break the tedium, we’re gearing up for some more glittering awards ceremonies.
Last night in London the 2011 WGSN Global Fashion Awards, sponsored by SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, were launched to no small amount of fanfare! And who’s on the shortlist?
Four of the six nominees for the prestigious Most Influential Designer, Womenswear award are British! The list includes Christopher Bailey of Burberry, Erdem, (well, he’s a LONDON designer at least) Phoebe Philo of Céline, and friend of Grazia and very dishy Scot, Jonathan Saunders, (AND he’s only just finished winning Designer of the Year at the Scottish Fashion Awards!) are all up for the big prize and will have to compete against Marc Jacobs and Miuccia Prada; so no pressure there then. In the Breakthrough Designer category, Grazia favourite, Michael van der Ham made it on to the shortlist!
In the retail sections, Brits are also well represented, with Browns and Matches both up for the Outstanding Brand Mix Award, plus with ASOS, Middleton’s fave, Reiss, Karen Millen and TOPSHOP all in the running for the Global Brand or Retailer Award and ASOS, PLUS! My-wardrobe and Net-A-Porter all nominated for the Best Etailer gong.
Oh yes, one more thing. The WGSN awards are clearly leaving no fashion stone unturned as they are even giving awards for the best Designer/Brand Collaborations! (Surely the reward for that kind of thing is the huge amount of cash and publicity generated?) George at Asda & Barbara Hulanicki and Karl Lagerfeld for Diet Coke are up for this one!
Good luck one and all!
