The designer with models and Grace Jones in 1985
Oooh! John Galliano’s trial in Paris is fast approaching so it’s not as if the story has gone cold. But we’ve just heard a funny rumour that we’re about to repeat. Apparently as well as the roll call of designers we predicted would be touted as possible successors at the Dior atelier, an approach was made to someone a little bit off the radar (though no less brilliant for it) Can you guess? Here are some clues.
He’s best friends with Naomi Campbell and tight with Grace Jones.
He hasn’t shown on the conventional catwalk circuit for some years, but is likely to reappear with a mini comeback next month at Couture Week.
YESS!!! It’s Azzedine Alaia. He told an FT blogger that he had been approached by LVMH with regards to the position, despite his semi-retirement years ago when he stopped producing collections according to the biennial fashion weeks, preferring instead to deliver to stores ‘when he is ready’.
It’s most likely that the grand fromages at Dior were tipped off about the designer’s potential by two prominent Dior muses/collaborators, costume jeweller Camille Miceli and fine jeweller Victoire de Castellane, are often clad head-to-toe in Alaia. Alaia’s fans are passionate about him, and although he’s not going to take LVMH up on their offer – after all he’s possibly the most successful designer to have so far resisted the temptation of a big name brand job, with all its attendant diffusion lines, fragrances, menswear, resort and pre-fall collections, and has kept his name to one undiluted range.
Ooh, we are INTRIGUED as to what he’ll come up with for his summer show!
