With so many races, polo matches and boules games to watch at the moment, it’s safe to say that preppy season is well and truly upon us. Only a few weeks back, Prep King Tommy Hilfiger told us about the key pieces a girl needs to really pull off that spotlessly chic look but when we realized we couldn’t afford a house in the Hamptons, we decided to take matters into our own fair hands and go for the next best thing: a custom made pair of deck shoes.
Yesterday the kind folks at Timberland invited us for a farm-style breakfast (essential for all that sea air) in their store in Shoreditch’s Fournier Street, so that we could make a stab at being designer for the day and build our own boat shoes. Girls and guys more used to wearing skinny jeans and sipping black coffee than facing the elements on board a yacht, tucked into boiled eggs and Monterey Jack toast while colour-blocking their way through the online design process. Even die-hard rock n’ roll model Irina Lazareanu turned boat-chic for the day in wide-legged sailor pants and a mannish blazer. It was a seafaring look that was more Coco Chanel on the Cote d’Azur than Blair Waldorf in Nantucket, but we saluted her nod to the preppy picture nonetheless.
Having battled our way through oceans of colour combinations we eventually settled for an eye-watering mix of hot pink and burnt red, with gold initials emblazoned on the side.
We’re picturing them with scruffy rolled up jeans and a leather biker jacket to get us through the festival season. It’s the perfect way to dip into the preppy trend, without actually having to push the boat out.
