It’s official: Lady Gaga is a fashion icon. At last night’s CFDA’s, clad in a turquoise wig, custom Thierry Mugler bustier (later removed) and typically vertiginous platforms, Lady Gaga accepted the CFDA’s prestigious fashion icon award, cementing her place as a fully-fledged style star.
The CFDA don’t hand out their fashion icon award willy nilly, so Gaga’s inclusion is a pretty impressive recognition of the way she’s inspired Gagettes everywhere with her ever evolving style. Pre-Gaga recipients of the award have included Iman, who was presented with the prize last year, though before that it hadn’t been bestowed on anyone since Kate Moss waaay back in 2005. Leading up to Moss is a roll-call of fabulousness consisting of Sarah Jessica Parker in 2004, Nicole Kidman in 2003 and C.Z. Guest (an American socialite famed for her amazeballs WASP style - read all about her here) in 2002. WAIT - Nicole Kidman? Hmmm...
Anyway, as she accepted her award last night, Gaga told the story of how she would save up her money as a teenager in order to buy vintage Thierry Mugler from thrift stores (Grazia Daily would kill to see these pics) and as a result was accepting her award on behalf of American youth, saying ‘ as much as this award means to me personally ... I just want you to know how much this means to young Americans’.
Lady G also told the BRILLZ story of how, when it was announced she was set to be honoured by the CFDA she received a text from Anna Wintour, which she assumed was a message from her friend called Anna, and thus replied with a message saying ‘Yes, bitch, we did it!’ Anna, according to Gaga, replied in a typically cool manner, by texting ‘How lovely’. >snort<
