Clinging on to Couture

27 May 2011

The King of Cling, the Boss of Body-Con – whatever you want to call him, Azzedine Alaia has made an indelible mark on the fashion landscape since he first introduced his itty-bitty scraps of lycra to a newly fitness-crazed fashion world waaaaay back in the eighties.

Considering the legions of hyper-honed fans he has accumulated over the years – from Grace Jones to Michelle Obama and Carine Roitfeld to Naomi Campbell – all of whom swear by his famously curve-enhancing designs – you’d think he’d be swaggering around Paris like the monarch that he is.

But the pint-sized Tunisian prefers to do things differently. For years he has refused to hop on the fashion carousel of twice-yearly fashion weeks and strictly timed collections, preferring to show his timeless pieces to a select number of friends and industry insiders at his private atelier in the Marais.

So naturally the fashion world is all abuzz this morning at the news that the designer is to show at Paris Couture week in July. Together with Giambattista Vallianother exciting addition to the dizzyingly glamorous week – we’re hoping his presence will add a healthy dose of good old-fashioned sex appeal to a week of spectacular clothes.

And just to remind you JUST how important this piece of news is, here’s a quote about the designer from a very reputable fashion source. Straight from the horse’s mouth.

Cher: "Oh, no. You don't understand this is an Alaia."
Robber: "An a-what-a?"
Cher: "It's like a totally important designer."
Robber: "And I will totally shoot you in the head. Get down!"
