The Weekend’s Best Dressed: Yes, we Cannes!

16 May 2011

Monday morning and we’re back to inspect the latest offerings from the Cannes catwalk. Over the weekend, it’s been white a-go-go, with Cheryl Cole, Mini-Olsen and Astrid Berges-Frisbey continuing the trend which Uma Thurman and Rachel McAdams started last week. And praise be for Penelope Cruz and her gob-smacking frou-frou. So who was the weekend’s Best Dresser? Let’s examine the evidence...

We begin with Penelope Cruz at the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides photocall, and can we just say how darn fabulous she looks only months after giving birth? Wowsers. Her form-fitting Stella McCartney A/W ’11 dress has a velvet skirt and a contrasting bodice, really making the most of those killer curves, while her satin Casadei heels are super sexy. What a hottie.

Onto the premiere later that evening and Pen cracked out a to-die-for Marchesa gown oozing with tulle starting on the shoulders and flowing into a magnificent train. Just dreamy, wouldn't you say? She accessorised with a gold Swarovski clutch, Chopard jewels and an adorable flicky ponytail.

See, white strikes again! Joining La Cruz for Pirate fun is up-and-coming starlet Astrid Berges-Frisbey. You may recognize her pretty little face from ze oh-la-la French Connection campaign, but now she’s a bonafide actress, playing a mermaid alongside Mr Depp, she’s got her mitts on Chanel Couture. Oh yes, this cute dress is from Karl’s S/S ‘09 collection and although there may be some eye-rolling at her disheveled hair and make-up free face, it’s a refreshing sight among all the groomed glitz, non? You've also got to admire the girl for adding her own funky twist with a pair of fierce fuchsia heels. As for the premiere parade, ABF continued to keep it simple with a sleek silver shift embellished with twinkling details on the sleeves and at the hem. A pair of black courts polished off the look. Nice work or totes blah?

Wayheeey for the unexpected, but utterly welcome appearance of SJP! Floating, flimpsing and flicking her way around the Wu Xia premiere, Sarah Jessica Parker brought her usual fashion flare to the proceedings by making the most of her gorgeously full-skirted Elie Saab A/W ’11 gown with that striking floral print. J’adore.

Didn’t we tell you white is the colour of Cannes 2011? Because next up for your inspection is our Chezza in yet another beautiful blanche gown. The plunging neckline and draped skirt on this one is perfect for her transformation from a Power Bouffed Wonder Woman to a full-on glamour puss, so it’s hardly surprisingly to learn it’s by Chez-fave, Stéphane Rolland – lest we forget the many dramatic creations worn by the Geordie for the X Factor. So although the gold pear (?) accent on the waist is causing a few wrinkled eyebrows here at Grazia HQ, her slick VB-like ponytail is an encouraging improvement. Phewf.

Mia Wasikowska ValentinoMia Wasikowska Valentino

Cuteness! After treating us to a stunning Roland Mouret number for the premiere, Mia Wasikowska was back with another dose of understated elegance for the Restless photocall. The Australian actress kept things super-girlie in a pink Valentino Pre-Fall 2011 dress made of delicate lace, teamed with nude Valentino heels.

Ooh how we love a newbie! And this one comes with quite a fashwan history. Indeed, it’s Elizabeth Olsen, aka: MK and Ashley’s mini-me, who’s trotting around the French Rivera to promote her acting credentials in Martha Marcy May Marlene. Naturallement, the lucky lady had first dibs on not only her big sisters’ wardrobes but also their numerous catwalk collections, so first up, she donned this - you guessed it - white embroidered dress from The Row’s A/W ’11 range, then ditched the feminine for the flapper and arrived at the evening premiere in a slinky black gown with a thigh-high split from the same collection. She’s certainly inherited the trademark Olsen quirkiness, hasn't she, tying her wavy locks into a headband, but umm, perhaps she could’ve covered up those twins? And we don’t mean her big sisters... Gulp.

So there you go, dears. The stars have delivered the goods, now you need to bring in the verdict. Hash it out below...
