And so it starts. Oh yes, frock-watchers, the 2011 Cannes Film Festival has rolled into town, so brace yourselves for a torrent of flashbulb-popping, pap-filled red carpets teeming with gob-smacking gowns. Woopee!
First to arrive when the festivities kicked off in Carlton Beach yesterday was Salma Hayek promoting her new film Puss In Boots. Unsurprisingly, considering her hubby is PPR Gucci Group’s CEO, the Latino star was dressed head-to-toe in the Italian brand, and doesn’t she look feisty for it? Salma accessorised her cognac leather strapless dress from Gucci’s A/W’11 catwalk with a floral appliqué shrug (the very same worn by J-Lo at the Met Ball, FYI), purple snake-skin belt and we’re betting cosmetics from her new beauty line. Yup, you heard right, she's wearing A/W’11 leather. In Cannes. Gulp.
But for the evening event, it was glitz a go-go as Ms Hayek stepped out in this incredible silk georgette gown by Gucci Première (obvs). With a bustier embroidered with silver sequins and crystals cascading over that pleated skirt, it perfectly sums up Cannes glam. Erm, Kate Beckinsale, who?
In contrast to Salma’s toasty leather, Uma Thurman looked very spring-in-the-French-Riveria appropriate thanks a Dolce & Gabbana S/S ‘11 white embroidered dress teamed with silver Jimmy Choo sandals. Ok, so the frock isn’t a jaw-dropper but it is understated, on-trend and utterly refreshing, so we’re giving it a thumbs up.
But the big bang came later that evening. We're giving ginormous hurrahs when the red carpet rolled out and the actress, who is a jury member for the festival, turned into a stunning swan, donning this strapless white gown from Versace’s A/W ‘11 catwalk, worn with little more than a chic up 'do and the kind of colour-popping emerald earrings that Angelina Jolie would be proud of. So a thigh-high split, full skirt and a train of feathers? This is what you call a jaw-dropper.
Bringing us yet another white number, Rachel McAdams arrived to promote her new film, Midnight In Paris, which also stars Carla Bruni (although Mrs Sarkozy was nowhere to be seen, boo). The oh-so-pwetty Maxime Simoens S/S ‘11 Couture dress is adorned with camellia flowers on the shoulders and the pockets - sweet! But for the evening soiree, Rachel seriously upped the sex factor with this red silk Marchesa A/W '11 frock with illusion cap sleeves and a wonderfully whimsical tulle ruffle skirt. We covet.
Blimey, what a way to begin! We've had feathers, twinkles, racy lace - and it's only Day 1. So do tell, which lovely lady gets your vote so far? The box below awaits your verdict...
