As we get used to the idea that Hannah MacGibbon is departing Chloe after nearly a decade working at the iconic label, firstly as assistant to Phoebe Philo and as creative director since S/S ’09, Grazia Daily is taking the opportunity to cast our eyes back over MacGibbon’s greatest hits at the label.
MacGibbon’s tenure started just as the world plunged into financial meltdown, and where her predecessor Paulo Melim Andersson had reinvigorated the label with sexed-up minimalism during his seventeen months at the helm, MacGibbon’s softer aesthetic referenced both Phoebe Philo’s etherial back catalogue as well as the tailoring that Chloe became so well known for under Stella McCartney in the late '90s.
As a great ambassador for the brand, appearing at the end of her collections looking every bit as gorgeous as the models who had preceded her, MacGibbon’s inspiration as designer was centred around her belief that Chloe ‘touches a sensitivity and reality that a lot of women have rather than some fantasy.’ So what has the London-born designer’s three and a half years at Chloe given us? Well, read on…
The bow front pumps! From A/W 09, these bow embellished pumps were one of the runaway successes of MacGibbon’s tenure at Chloe. As well as adorning the feet of Kristen Stewart these were also spotted on Anna Dello Russo, cementing their place as an Object Of Lust.
The scallop edge shorts from Spring 2009 were from MacGibbon’s first collection, and were spotted on Sienna and brand ambassador Chloe Sevigny (in at least three shades, including olive, cream and camel) before spawning a gazillion high street imitations.
The BAGS! Of all the amazing Chloe bags released under MacGibbon – and there were many, many of them – the Aurore duffle bag was one of Grazia Daily’s favourites. And we weren’t alone, as Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson and Jessica Alba all joined us in lusting after the caramel leather number.
From one of MacGibbon’s last collections, this cap sleeve whipstitch leather dress from the resort 2011 collection has already been spotted on Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson and Kate Bosworth. AND it’s still available at Net-a-porter if all this talk of MacGibbon’s departure is making you feel nostalgic.
The boyish suit. Of all MacGibbon's designs, this boyish suit perfectly summed up her approach to the Chloe aesthetic; soft, loose and immaculately tailored. We love.
