Designer Patrick Robinson Leaves GAP

05 May 2011

In a rather unexpected announcement from Gap HQ in San Francisco today, the following statement was issued;

‘Gap Inc. Announces Change in Design Leadership at Gap Brand

SAN FRANCISCO – May 5, 2011 – Gap Inc. today announced that Patrick Robinson, executive vice president of Gap Global Design for Adult and Body, is leaving the company, effective immediately.’

Although there were no quotes from Robinson himself, Pam Wallack, head of the Gap Global Creative Center in New York, said;

‘After spending the last three months in New York with the Creative team, I’ve made the decision to make a change within our Gap Adult design team,’

According to the Wall Street Journal the reason he had to go was a disappointing sales quarter which ended in April, and a fear that the iconic preppy brand was losing touch with its customers’ needs. Patrick is an easily recognizable figure in the fashion industry, and cuts a particularly dashing couple together with his wife, Virginia Smith. He was brought in, in 2008 to make Gap more fashion forward, after working at Armani, Perry Ellis, and Paco Rabanne as a ready to wear designer.
