So, at Monday night’s Met ball, the great and the good of the fashion world came together to celebrate the work of Lee McQueen (see our round-up of the best dressed here). And this year, amongst the Chanel, McQueen and Stella on the red carpet there was a new contender emerging as a high-end outfitter to be reckoned with: Topshop couture.
Okay, so we know that Topshop’s Couture collections are not ACTUAL couture, but in a world where Courtney Love’s ebay store uses the term as a suffix, we’re more than happy to apply it to the gorgeous bespoke designs from Karen Bonser which were spotted on Ginnifer Goodwin, Jessica Szohr and Maggie Grace on Monday night.
Bonser, Topshop UNIQUE’s joint head of design (alongside Jacqui Markham) has, of course, been showing the UNIQUE collections since 2001 (on-schedule since 2005), placing the label firmly at the centre of the high-end fashion stage. The Met ball, however is a very different arena – not only because it takes place stateside, where Topshop only launched in April 2009, but also because it’s the number one annual event when celebs and fashion meet.
Karen exclusively spoke to Grazia Daily from the US about how Ginnifer, Jessica and Maggie came to wear Topshop to this year’s Met ball, saying ‘we are thrilled that Ginnifer, Jessica and Maggie chose to wear Topshop to the Met Ball. The dress Ginnifer wore is actually from our Unique AW11 collection, the original dress was in black and white stripe but Emerald is a favourite colour of Ginnifers so we were happy to develop the dress in this strong colour which works really well with her colouring. Jessica's dress is also from Unique AW11 and is such a fun dress, really playful! [Maggie] Grace chose a dress from our Limited Edition collection.
She added ‘we often make bespoke outfits for special events and people, it's always great to see our clothes worn out to such prestigious events not just on the catwalk, especially as they show the heart of Topshop as they were intended, worn on a great night out!’
A great night out indeed, Ms Bonser.
