The Weekend’s Best Dressed: Alexa, Diane, Kate at COACHELLA!

18 April 2011

Hurrah, festival season is upon us! And nothing gets Grazia Daily in the mood for summer like a pile of pics from Coachella. The three-day event, which took place this weekend, saw beautiful bohemian and rocker types descend upon Palm Springs, California for the ultimate camp-in musical festival of cool. If watching The Kings of Leon performing on a giant polo field in the middle of the scorching desert is your thing, this is quite simply the hippest place to be. Which is why we’ve spent the morning enviously gawping at the festival's swathes of style-setters - from Diane and Alexa to Whitney and Rihanna – who’ve effortlessly coached (ha!) us in how to work an indie look that's simultaneously fresh and functional. A bounteous sea of Ray Bans, sundresses worn with sunburn, grass stains on a gazillion denim cut-offs – here’s the Best Dressed of Coachella 2011...

We begin with the hottest trend on the lawn: little white dresses. Alessandra Ambrosio, Alexa Chung and Whitney Port proved LWDs can be both flirty and fuss-free — just add sunnies, chunky accessories and mile-long legs. Simples!

Meanwhile, Katy Perry took the style a vintage step further with a layered lace dress by D&G, teamed with a string of pearls, beige braided sandals and a brown skinny belt, with a polka dot Marcy Delta scarf in her barnett. What an unexpectedly romantic look from ol' K-Pez, eh?

From short-&-sweet dresses to ankle-biters to full-on maxi skirts, here’s festie free-spirits Isabel Lucas and Diane Kruger in gorgeous nude floor-sweepers. The billowing, lightweight material is guaranteed to keep you cool in the searing heat and maxis bring a dreamy alternative to tighter-than-tight Daisy Dukes. Easy-breezy, no? But don't think that means teeny shorts were off the menu...

Because when Mulberry set up camp, the fashion flock weren’t far behind. Nicole Richie, Camilla Belle and Eliza Doolittle joined Creative Director Emma Hill to laze around the pool in their thigh-skimming shorts, surrounded by the A/W ’11 catwalk’s pretty toadstools. And, of course, the gals made the most of the Brit superbrand’s festival-worthy bags – we’re particularly crazy about Miss Doolittle’s colour-popping Taylor Mini Satchel in Bright Cabbage. WANT!

2010’s Queen of Coachella Cool, Kate Bosworth was strolling about the grassy campsite in a chilled combo of white shorts with a suitably rockeresque American flag vest from Topshop (how very Aggy) plus aviators. Then, without skipping a style beat, Kate slipped into a floaty black frock for the after-dark shenanigans. We sigh.

As for Rihanna, she got her Coachella (ella, ella) groove on thanks to a bulky army jacket and matching fedora, topped off by a pair of classic denim cut-offs with a perfectly frayed hemline. Just one thing - cheer up, love!

Also rocking the style scene was Dita Von Teese, who nailed this season's ultra-bright colour palette with a neon Moschino Cheap and Chic multi-print dress, followed up by a scorching Hawaiian tropical number from Christian Dior's S/S '11 collection, worn with a white sailor hat and those Christian Louboutin espadrilles. Hmm, brilliantly funky or far too try hard? You decide!

Skipping over to the hoards of crowd surfers, Katy Perry was moshing amongst them and, thanks to more retro chic from D&G, she was the chicest of them all in her gingham button top with faaabulous shades and a wide brimmed hat. Likewise, Kelly Osbourne worked the perfect festival hat – floppy in a '70s stylee and sure to ward off heatstroke – along with her cat-eye sunglasses and polka dot frock.

So, dears, you’ve oogled the fest best, and can find even more A-listers getting Coachella’d in the gallery below, but what we reeeally want to know is which rock chick gets your vote. Do tell...
