Remembering Elizabeth Taylor: Her Best Dressed Moments

24 March 2011

As the world mourns the late, great Dame Elizabeth Taylor, we’re reminded of her most incredible fashion moments. Swathed in extravagant dresses, dripping in diamonds and accessorising with one of her many husbands, the actress became a timeless style-setter and the epitome of Hollywood glamour. So join us on today’s fashion fest to celebrate the style legacy that she left behind, and to pay tribute to those iconic moments that will never die...

Here she is in 1952 at the tender age of 21, flaunting that raven-haired, violet-eyed, red-lipped beauty and teeny tiny waist, which sealed her sex symbol status. At five foot two, she was 'short, extremely curvaceous and not as easy to dress as Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn,' admitted costumer Edith Head who was a close friend. But c'mon, short or not, those are curves to die for.

Arriving at New York International Airport with fellow actresses Grace Kelly and Lorraine Day in 1955, Elizabeth is a vision of femininity in the hourglass silhouette that fash-land has fallen in love with. And proving she was the forerunner of jet-set chic (er, Victoria Beckham, who?), she pulls out another full-skirted stunner when returning home after a visit to the Moscow Film Festival with singer husband Eddie Fisher.

Elizabeth's on-screen style also has us charmed, from the saucy swimsuit that showed off her voluptuousness in Suddenly Last Summer to working the current ballerina trend in Love Is Better Than Ever. How ahead of the times she was, no?

Never one to shy away from making a style statement, Elizabeth works polka dots when heading to Gibraltar with Eddie in 1959 and dramatic head-to-toe leopard print for an evening at the Saville Theatre in 1963.

Visiting Richard Burton on the set of Becket with her daughter Liza Todd in 1964, Elizabeth was the ultimate yummy mummy in lashings of pink. And for her wedding day to Burton on March 15, 1964, she opted for a pure-as-a-primrose yellow frock teamed with matching floral headdress. Take note, Miss Middleton.

And then came the thigh-flashing! In the swinging 60s, Liz invested in many a babydoll dress, which she wore with elegant heels to make the most of those toned pins and of course, a magnificent hair-banded bouffant.

And finally, here's the screen siren getting even more theatrical with age, sporting flashy headgear and glittering gowns or looking swanky in a dazzling blue kaftan. Elizabeth, we salute you.
