Riccardo Tisci Accepted Givenchy To Keep His Mum's House!

22 March 2011

The guessing game remains in full swing and speculation on his next move may have already reached the level we like to call ‘this is silly now’ but the man in the centre of it all remains silent. So, when Riccardo Tisci talks in a recent interview about nearly not taking on his current role at Givenchy we listen. And if he doesn’t exactly give us any clues as to where his mind’s at right now well, he succeeds in making us love him even more!

‘I wasn’t interested,’ says Tisci. ‘Not at all.’ So what made him change his mind? His mum, ladies and gents! ‘My mother called me and said to me, “I am going to sell our house, because your sisters are struggling [Riccardo has eight sisters], they’re having children, they need the money, I will go to a retirement home.” I heard that, and it was like a knife in my heart.’ Tissues at the ready, readers? Riccardo continues, ‘I felt such a failure, that my mother had to sell the house of my father whom I don’t remember. And then I went to Paris, and they showed me a contract with all these zeros on it, and it was like help from God. I thought, “If I sign this, my mother will never have to worry again.” So I signed it.’ And aren’t we glad he did? ‘The first thing I did was pay off the house, and set aside enough for my family. It was the best present I’ve ever been able to give.’

Yes, we love him and yes, we don’t really know for sure whether he has been offered Galliano’s role at Dior and whether he has already signed a contract with even more zeros on it but either way, this is one young talented designer we wish the best for and who seems to know what’s real and important and what’s just a game. Which brings us nicely back to that guessing game…
