Joseph Altuzarra and Alexander Wang are two of our favourite New York designers and not only do we wish our wardrobes were full of their designs we think they’d be great friends to hang out with too! So, when we saw their A/W’11 collections, Altuzarra’s just a few hours after Wang’s, we couldn’t help but notice some very striking similarities. Sure, with New York having gone through a pretty harsh winter special attention was placed on outerwear and both designers focused on cooler-than-NY-in-January parkas and quilted poncho hybrids, which we loved. But furry shoes and Prodigy in the soundtrack of both shows? The New York Times’ Cathy Horyn even wondered whether the two were on a poncho design challenge!
Well, it turns out that there’s a very simple answer behind it all and it has something to do with age. ‘What people discount is that we're the same age, and we hang out a lot, and even if we don't talk about our collections, we see similar things’, Joseph told Fashionologie. ‘I mean, we also have very similar reference points in time, because we're the same age.’ Very true indeed – both designers are, gulp, just 27 years old and the current Nineties revival is largely down to them. Perhaps, seeing the two are good friends, they had discussed their plans for their collections? ‘We hadn't, actually’, the CFDA-nominated Altuzarra responds, ‘and this is really the truth — when I saw his show I was like, "Oh my God, we're going to get panned."’ Panned they didn’t get. On the contrary both shows were widely regarded as two of the season’s best but don’t expect any diva tantrums here. ‘Honestly, I think it's more funny than anything. And I hope people see it as [that].’ We do and we’re sure Joseph and Alex are laughing all the way to the bank together!
