Latest twists and turns in the story of Jimmy Choo . . .

18 March 2011

There are rumours and rumblings that Tamara Mellon will sell her Jimmy Choo business – the most likely buyer is, naturally, LVMH. HOWEVER, a new name has been thrown into the ring – the name of the brand itself, and original founding partner, Mr Jimmy Choo.

Way back in the Nineties, Jimmy was a bespoke shoemaker whose clients included Princess Diana, and a certain accessories editor at Vogue – Tamara Mellon. She used to commission so many pairs for her editorial shoots that she persuaded him to go into business with her and mass-produce the colourful beauties . . . and the rest is history.

Since a split between the two in 2001, Jimmy has had nothing to do with the megabrand, for which Tamara is (in the most literal sense of the word) the poster girl as well as owner, and has overseen the company’s huge expansion into men’s shoes, bags and even fragrance, all the while being an international red-carpet stalwart, dating the cream of Hollywood and posing naked for the likes of Terry Richardson.

Although it is said that Choo himself doesn’t have the personal wealth to buy the company, well placed sources believe it’s likely that Chinese financial backers will be on his side.

Hmm. The talk is, Tamara would NEVER let this happen, so we guess we’ll all have to wait and see!
