Following on from her inexplicably mismatched shoes at the Golden Globes, we're sure it comes as little surprise to learn that Grazia Daily is very excited to see what the sartorially bonkers Helena Bonham Carter is going to sport at th e Oscars later this month, where she has been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role as the Queen Mum in The King’s Speech.
Helena has just opened up about the forthcoming Hollywood fash-off, saying ‘Of course I want to have fun ... It's probably going to be a catastrophe. But it's like, I'm gonna go for it.’ She added ‘I can suddenly go off piste. But we'll wait and see. And quite frankly, as my boyfriend knows, it's right up to the last minute it can go wrong at any time.. It's a mystery to me at this point.’
Naturally, this got Grazia Daily’s last remaining brain cell engaged, as we wondered what kind of look we’d like Helena to plump for on February 27th. Having seen how demure and elegant Miss B C looked at the official nominees’ lunch, where she wore a simple black dress, accessorised with classic pearls and a Lulu Guinness Glamour Girl bag, we are tempted to suggest that Helena could opt for something teeeerrrriby chic like another LBD. But how disappointing would that be? Very. As the chief ambassador for fashion eccentrics everywhere, Grazia Daily would love to see Helena pull out all the stops for the Oscars 2011, so we’ve helpfully compiled a few ideas which might help her to decide.
Few women, men or animals can carry off a repeated banana print or luminous orange stripes with aplomb, but Helena, we believe, might just be the exception to the rule. Muiccia Prada’s cacophony of prints for SS/11 is just the thing to help Helena stand out from the crowd, and accessorising with the neon bright foxtails from the same collection would be the icing on the cake. As well, perhaps, as those Henry Holland earrings modelled by the Grazia Daily girls yesterday...
Okay, so we know that Helena is a fan of Westwood, often opting to wear her for red carpet events. Grazia Daily’s personal choice from this season’s collection would be either this am-A-zing striped sack dress, or this very Les Mis ensemble of bustier top and floor length russet skirt. Accessorised, of COURSE, with a cornflower blue mask.
Finally, Helena could look to the Oscars back catalogue for inspiration. There have been numerous looks over the years which Helena could make her own (Celine’s backwards tux, Cher’s Bob Mackie Mohawk, par example) but our all time favourite is undoubtedly Bjork’s The Swan. In this post-Gaga world, however, where prosciutto has already been utilised as an award-dress fabric, Helena needs to think outside the box. Yang Du, recipient of last season’s NEWGEN award at London Fashion Week has some amaze knitted lion and tiger head dresses which we would actually pay to see Helena don, and Reid Peppard, a London-based designer and taxidermist specialises in creating accessories from unlikely livestock (rats, guinea pigs, pigeons –that sort of thing) which would look perfect matched with Helena’s signature dishevelled style.
So what about you lovely people? What would you like Helena to wear for this year’s Oscars?
