Good news for disco queens! King of embellished body-con frocks and the man behind iconic looks worn by Cheryl Cole and Beyonce has done a capsule collection for TOPSHOP which will be out just in time for Fashion Week. How brilliant we say. Often canny Topshop will watch a designer produce a few great collections in a row before they make their move. Then the collection for the High St giant will take its influence from the standout pieces of one or more of these – like a mini greatest hits only reworked in more affordable fabrics.

David Koma for Topshop is no exception – with black figure huggin’ dresses with chunky silver tubing embellishment that look like the A/W ’09 collection – the one that both pop divas latched onto. So far so good, BUT this time around – he’s refused to compromise on his original vision in any way, which has resulted in Topper’s most premium and most limited edition EVER! Whoop! Prices are going to range from £100 to £350 – which is a lot for High St. However, the reason for the price points is simply that the fabric and finish have much more in common with the high end pieces they are based on. Knowing the feeling of disappointment when a garment that looks wicked in pictures turns out to be made of rubbishy old swimming cozzie polyester when you touch it – we think that this quality/price gamble may well be one that pays off. David has only been on-schedule at London Fashion Week for one season yet seems to feature in more trend round-ups and more editorial shoots than almost any other designer without an advertising budget.

Georgian-born David won the Central St Martins Best Womenswear Collection 2007 amongst other awards whilst studying, and has since scooped the Vauxhall Fashion Scout Merit Award and most recently NEWGEN sponsorship.

AND he is only 25! We’ve said in the past that he’s a one to watch, and we’re not taking our eyes off him yet!
