Christopher Kane has won the BFC Fashion Fund!

02 February 2011

Congratulations to Mr Kane! The Glaswegian whizz kid will receive £200, 000! The stash is provided by sponsors including Burberry, Harrods, Marks & Spencer, House of Fraser, Toni & Guy, Topshop and Westfield. The other half of the prize is mentoring and business support from access to director level mentors across the industry to ensure they invest it wisely. The prize was established last year to further enhance the reputation of London’s rising stars and assist in the development of their businesses, the previous winner being Erdem for his floral delights.

Absolutely brill skillz Christopher and his business partner and sister Tammy Kane have given a big interview to celebrate. In The Times, he revealed that he dreaded having to pitch the label to the BFC judging panel because ‘It was like Dragons’ Den,’ to which Tammy added ‘Multiplied by 100.’

The siblings also talked about the fact that although the A/W ’11 collection will be their tenth, it has not made them blasé about Christopher’s ability to produce a winning collection every time. Talking about the pressure to deliver he said ‘You get that bit more jittery in the morning, you don’t sleep well. The show is starting to feel close . . .’

‘You know what it’s like?’ interrupts Tammy. “I haven’t had a baby, but like that this has to get done so it will be done. Although it will be painful . . .’

‘But’ adds Christopher — ‘we’re just part of a group [of fashion designers] who are all going through sheer hell. And it is, I’m not going to lie. You are always doubting yourself, and it is a horrible feeling.’

Wowsers, he’s got a long way to go until he reaches Valentino-like levels of Emperor-ness.  Although, you would have thought that his work for Donatella Versace over at Versus would have given his ego a teeny boost. One thing he did reveal though, was that the business is doing well enough to need to take on some more staff. Rather than naughtily pinching someone from a rival fashion brand, or even putting an ad in the paper, Kane will turn to his family once again – and bring his other sister Sandra down to London for two days a week.

Ah. We are SO PLEASED for Christopher. Well done and we are already rubbing our hands together at the thought of the next collection. Only a few weeks to go!
