For my first appointment in Gay Paris - very wet and drizzly today, FYI - I strolled down the Rue de la Paix from my hotel to the Ritz hotel for a press conference with Natalia Vodianova who is here to publicise her much lauded collaboration with French lingerie giant, Etam, also available online in the UK.
Not only does the Ritz seem an appropriate venue for a meeting with such a fashion luminary, but we were ushered into one of the swaggiest, most pelmet-heavy chinzy salons I have ever had the priviledge of sitting in - a perfect backdrop for anyone rocking S/S '11 style florals - as Natalia was in a brilliant KENZO wide-legged jumpsuit. She co-ordinated perfectly with the plush upholstery of the room. Marvellous!
Natalia spoke at length of the rigours of designing lingerie, how involved in the process and how much she loves Etam. Brills. A star studded fashion show is to be held tonight in the Grand Palais, with promised rock'n'roll PAs from The Kills and Beth Ditto (will they be wearing the pants and bras? - we can't wait to find out!)
Natalia described the job of designer as a scary one, 'because you are exposing yourself, your work to other people and you don't know how you will be received, so you have to be brave. Being a model is a kind of one-dimentional job so now I am trying to show people that I have another dimension'.
We asked Natalia if she was modelling in the show - 'No I'm not - I will be sitting in the front row and watching it all' she smiled. But SURELY you'll be taking a bow at the end? 'Do you know, we haven't decided that yet. Maybe it would be nice.' Essential photo-op we would say, Natalia. And how does she feel about being at a fashion week without walking in a single show? Does she miss it? 'I'm not sure how I feel about it. I haven't decided yet, it is a bit strange'
Thank you so much Miss Vodianova - what a pleasure to meet you.
