What’s on Stefano Pilati’s Sky+? His favourite show Glee it seems! And what’s on his iPod? Rihanna’s new album and a whole load of LCD Soundsystem, who you’ll often hear at YSL shows.
Pilati revealed his surprising cultural tastes in an in-depth interview with W magazine this month, for which he turned up wearing something, er, a little surprising too. ‘Off-white wide-wale corduroy pants rolled at the ankle; low webbed rubber boots for hunters, painted with camouflage foliage; a white V-neck with extravagantly long sleeves doubled up to the elbow under a black calf-length sleeveless cardigan like a 21st-century toga,’ is how the writer described the fashion legend’s look. Wow! We don’t even know what ‘wide-wale corduroy’ is… ‘With a beard and close-cut hair matching his tortoiseshell glasses, and assorted tattoos (Japanese flowers, mother forever, a star, the wing of an eagle), Pilati could be the bass player in a rock band or an avant-garde theatre director.’
But of course he’s not. Pilati’s Creative Director of YSL and one of Paris Fashion Week’s biggest players. He met Yves Saint Laurent only once and was almost overcome with the enormity of the occasion. “I was almost crying,” he recalls. The meeting was brief. Saint Laurent complimented him on his personal style (was he wearing the corduroy is what we want to know?) and Pilati left elated —'as if I won an Oscar.' Now that is a beautiful story.
