Michelle Obama kicks off fashion controversy!

21 January 2011

Grazia Daily – and you our dear readers – might have loved seeing Michelle Obama step out in British designs earlier this week for a state visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao, but it seems some weren’t so keen. Step forward Oscar de la Renta, who believes the First Lady should be sticking strictly to home-grown design talent. 'My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade – American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?’ he mused to WWD yesterday.

The American designer insists he’s not bitter about Michelle Obama not wearing his own clothes (this is the man who famously dressed Hillary Clinton, remember) but thinks she should be giving exposure to young talent. 'I’m old and I don’t need it. But there are a lot of young people, very talented people here who do,’ he said. Oh come on Oscar! Is there no pleasing this man? When MObama wore J. Crew to Buckingham Palace, the designer grumbled that 'it's wrong to go in one direction only.' Besides, Jason Wu’s already a household name. So don’t Sarah Burton’s new McQueen and the gorgeous and talented Roksanda Illincic deserve a bit of a fashion high too? Then again, us Brits probably would say that.
