Knock knock! Who’s that at the door? Did anyone order a fast-talking, Barbie referencing multi-colour-wig wearing female rapper? Oh, its YOU Nicki Minaj. You may as well come in then, since you're here. But you should have dressed up a bit. Didn’t you know it was the V Magazine cover shoot today? Never mind Nicki, we’ve bought a load of BODY PAINT just in case this happened. Now, let’s get you coloured in and get on with the shoot.

We haven’t got any proof that the conversation between photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin and Nicki and her “people” went like that, we’re letting ourselves get carried away for a minute there.

Anyway, the end result is LOVELY, the accompanying clothes being by Versace and our own London-based Mark Fast, so hurrah for that. Nicki’s facepaint is very cool we think you’ll agree and follows a long tradition in the bizniss of rock ’n roll of painting yourself black and white like a skeleton – from Mick Jagger to Kiss to lovely singer Fever Ray last year, so Mizz Minaj is in good company.

2011 certainly looks promising for hip hop’s most colourfully dressed protagonist. After years of writing her own material and working her way up through the scene, plus a quick makeover to start off dressing like a lava lamp, she’s now got the number 2 album in the States, Pink Friday, and Kanye West has apparently called her 'the scariest artist in the game right now – she has the most potential to be the number two rapper of all time,' after she sang on his single [Number one, in Kanye’s mind being Eminem, in case you were wondering].

Obviously, from anyone else that might sound like a back-handed compliment or even a bit rude, but coming from Kanye, its unequivocal praise indeed.   We're fairly confident that's not the last we'll be seeing of her this year.
